Ameneh and David sent a great video for Salma and Mani from London. A day in the life from chocolate, fish and mushrooms in Borough Market...to an blistery evening with the not so itsy bitsy spider at Tate Modern interspersed with performances from street musicians and other cool stuff. It's really well done. I've excepted a musical interlude that I'm sure Buby and Zaida will enjoy very much. Enjoy.

Fun in December
Everyone has been sick these past few weeks. Mani had an ear infection, Salma had 9 days of fever up to 103, Zahra and I got some kind of chest cold. Quite a cacophony some nights at home.
But recently we've started getting better. And to celebrate, I straightened my hair (Don't worry... just temporary). BTW, tomorrow we're off to Palm Springs for a few days.

Playing peek a boo with Mani
As Mani continues his development he's becoming more and more fun. Now walking he's also playing with us a lot more intentionally. Recently we've been handing things back and forth and here's a little video of "where's Mani?".

Happy Birthday Mani
Yesterday was Mani's first birthday. No big party. Just Friday night dinner with the family including Ali who captured the moment with Zahra's new Flip Video ultra

Toby's Visit
Toby's been here for the last 10 days. Salma has loved having Toby around including, of course, to have someone for the ritual making of the couch bed in the living room. Salma is going to miss her.
Yesterday, Toby set up the kids tent in the backyard that was a gift from Khale Nazi and Amu Hasan. (Sorry for the crappy picture, Toby). Kids loved it.

Mani is crawling!
It happened really fast. Just a few weeks ago I took a video of Mani struggling to crawl. Ameneh thought it was very cold and objective reporting. She didn't quite say cruel. Then, while we in San Diego, he started crawling for real. And now he's so happy to be moving around the house on his own.
Not stopping there though. He stands up at every opportunity. Don't think walking is that far way.

A warm summer's evening at Nersi and Bella's
I hope this translates. We were at Nersi & Bella's house tonight for dinner with Enayat and Avideh. Dinner was wonderful. Cranberry-pomegranate martinis to start. Delicious chicken and zereshk polo. A rare warm summer night in Berkeley--we were eating outside. The hours went by. We eventually changed both kids into their pyjamas. Mani fell asleep on Zahra's lap. Salma was relaxing on mine. At some point, she became tired and needed to sleep.
We were going to go home. But Bella convinced us to try putting Salma to sleep in their spare room. I was in no rush to leave, so willing to try. There were two single beds. Quite narrow and a bit scary relative to the safety of her crib walls. I lay down with her for a while and talked about the day. As I got up, I positioned large pillows along the sides. And tucked her in. "Daddy is here, Salma".
I stayed in the next room for a bit, waiting for the inevitable cry that would test to see if I were really there. It came after a few minutes. I walked in. Assured her that I was there. And made sure the pillows were in place. I was nervous about the bed. It really was narrow. I had visions of Salma rolling and falling off the side. I continued to wait in the next room.
Next thing I know, there's Salma walking in the hall. All her 28 pounds and 34 inches covered in orange "ice cream" pyjamas...bare feet and ringlet hair... Making her way confidently through the hall. On her way outside to find Zahra.
As if to say, "what did you think you were going to accomplish with those pillows, again?" "Hello, Dad. I'm 2 years old. Remember?" As Bella says, they're always one step ahead of you.

Salma turns 2!
Salma turns two tomorrow. It's fantastic to see her growth and development. She seems to understand everything. She loves to help around the house. She seems to really care for Mani. And today she spent much of the day without diapers without accident.
We had a party on Saturday. Buby was in town from Toronto and made lots of great things to eat. Pascal bounced the kids on the sprinkler beach ball. Weather was great. It was fun all around.

Ay bee see dee
Mani seems to really want to get up and run around but his body is still working on sitting up. He continues to be a smiley baby. And he definitely enjoys his rice cereal.
Salma has taken to singing "Ay bee see dee" at all opportunity. She seems to have learned it at the day care with Roxanna. Last weekend they had a party... complete with clowns, candy floss and live afro-peruvian music. Her latest feat was to trick Ameneh's boyfriend David into walking with her down to the toy store. Hopefully khale will tell us the story herself. It seems the Salma is engaging more with her environment, enjoying it and talking about it.

Mani starts eating solid food
Today Zahra gave Mani some rice cereal for the first time. He ate it well. And the weening begins...
I put a more unabridged set of pictures in Picasa web albums. You should be able to order hard copies from here. I'm considering other services, so let me know whether or not this was convenient.

The Grandmothers
Maman Jaleh has been here since Mani's birth and has been a huge help and wonderful for Salma. Buby came for a 10-day visit at the end of February which was terrific. Salma had a blast finding her in the mornings sleeping in the livingroom. Zaida is going to have to come down on his own after tax season.
